Terms of Service

Last updated: April 2025

Please read these terms carefully before using PDF Lab. By accessing or using PDF Lab you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

1. Acceptance of terms

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) constitute a legally binding agreement between you (“you”, “your”, “user”) and Actwise (“Actwise”, “we”, “us”, “our”), the operator of PDF Lab located at https://pdflab.act-wise.com (the “Service”).

By visiting or using the Service, you confirm that you are at least 13 years of age, that you have the legal capacity to enter into these Terms, and that you agree to be bound by them. If you are using the Service on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization to these Terms.

2. Description of the service

PDF Lab is a free, browser-based collection of PDF and document utility tools, including (but not limited to) merging, splitting, compressing, rotating, converting, and editing PDF files. The Service is provided at no cost and requires no account registration or sign-in.

All file processing performed by PDF Lab occurs entirely within your browser using client-side JavaScript libraries. Files you open or process in PDF Lab are never transmitted to or stored on any server operated by Actwise. As a consequence, Actwise has no access to any content you process using the Service.

Actwise reserves the right to add, modify, or remove tools and features at any time without prior notice.

3. Acceptable use

You agree to use PDF Lab only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. You agree not to:

  • Use the Service to process, reproduce, or distribute content that infringes any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, or other intellectual property right.
  • Use the Service to process content that is unlawful, defamatory, threatening, abusive, harassing, obscene, or otherwise objectionable.
  • Attempt to probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Service or any related systems; circumvent any security or authentication measures; or interfere with the availability of the Service (including through denial-of-service attacks).
  • Use automated scripts, bots, scrapers, or similar tools to interact with the Service in a manner that places excessive load on our infrastructure.
  • Misrepresent your identity or affiliation, or impersonate any person or entity.
  • Use the Service in any manner that violates applicable local, national, or international law or regulation.

Because all processing is local to your device, Actwise has no technical ability to monitor the content of files you process. You are solely responsible for ensuring that your use of the Service and the content you process complies with all applicable laws.

4. Disclaimer of warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, ACTWISE EXPRESSLY DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

In particular, and without limitation:

  • Accuracy is not guaranteed. PDF Lab processes files using open-source libraries in your browser. Results may be imperfect, and certain PDF features (complex forms, embedded fonts, DRM protection) may not be fully preserved or reproduced.
  • Availability is not guaranteed. The Service may be temporarily unavailable due to maintenance, Cloudflare incidents, or factors beyond our control.
  • Browser compatibility is not guaranteed. PDF Lab is designed for modern browsers; it may not function correctly on older or non-standard browsers.

You should always keep a backup of any file before processing it. Actwise is not responsible for lost, corrupted, or altered files resulting from your use of the Service.

5. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, ACTWISE AND ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, AND AFFILIATES SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, GOODWILL, BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH YOUR USE OF (OR INABILITY TO USE) THE SERVICE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

TO THE EXTENT ANY LIABILITY IS FOUND NOTWITHSTANDING THE ABOVE, ACTWISE’S TOTAL CUMULATIVE LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED ONE UNITED STATES DOLLAR (USD $1.00).

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain warranties or damages. In such jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the greatest extent permitted by applicable law.

6. Intellectual property

The PDF Lab name, logo, and brand elements are owned by Actwise. All rights are reserved. You may not use the PDF Lab name or brand without prior written permission from Actwise.

PDF Lab is built on open-source libraries, principally pdf-lib and pdf.js, among others. Each library is used in accordance with its respective open-source license. Nothing in these Terms transfers any rights in those libraries to you beyond what their licenses already provide.

You retain all ownership rights in any files you process using the Service. Because your files never leave your device, Actwise acquires no rights in your file content whatsoever.

7. Suspension and termination

Actwise may, at its sole discretion and without prior notice, modify, suspend, or permanently discontinue the Service (in whole or in part) at any time for any reason, including without limitation to carry out maintenance, to comply with legal requirements, or because the Service is no longer economically viable.

Because no user accounts exist, there is no individual account to suspend. If you violate these Terms, Actwise may take technical measures to block your access to the Service.

8. Third-party links

The Service may contain links to external websites operated by third parties. These links are provided for convenience only. Actwise has no control over and assumes no responsibility for the content, privacy practices, or availability of third-party sites. Visiting a linked site is at your own risk.

9. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Actwise and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or related to your use of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any third-party rights, including intellectual property rights.

10. Governing law and disputes

These Terms and any dispute arising out of or relating to them or the Service shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. You agree that any legal action or proceeding arising under these Terms shall be brought exclusively in the competent courts located in the United States, and you consent to personal jurisdiction in those courts.

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.

11. Changes to these terms

Actwise reserves the right to modify these Terms at any time. We will indicate the date of the most recent revision at the top of this page. Your continued use of the Service after any modification constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms. If you do not agree to any revision, please stop using the Service.
